Frequently Asked Questions
- When was the historic building The Loom Room Retreat occupies built?- The Loom Room Retreat is housed in a remarkable piece of Dalton’s industrial heritage — the former Crown Cotton Mill. While the mill was originally established in 1885, the specific structure now home to The Loom Room Retreat was constructed in 1899. This one-story, 42,000-square-foot weaving room and storage shed represented a significant departure from the traditional three-story cotton mill design, favoring an open, high-ceilinged space that allowed for better airflow and lighting — ideal conditions for weaving. Remarkably, the bricks used in construction were handmade on site, and the timber was sourced from local forests. - By the early 20th century, Crown Mill had become Dalton’s largest employer and the cornerstone of its economy. In addition to providing jobs, the mill operated as a self-sustaining community with rental housing, a company store, a school, life insurance, a savings plan, a burial association, a baseball team, and even a concert band. The mill produced a heavy duck fabric — a durable, canvas-like material — that was in high demand across various industries. This thriving industrial foundation helped lay the groundwork for Dalton’s evolution into the Flooring Capital of the World.
